What a Strange Way to Save the World
We know God’s ways are above our ways, and we can’t understand all He does. We agree that God knows best in all he does but some things are just plain strange to us. The reason they seem strange is because they are so different than how we’d do them. Who would use a whale to transport a prophet to the place where he would lead the largest revival ever? Who would allow what happened to Job, or use a boy and a stone to kill a giant? Who would use hail and locust to rescue 2 ½ million people from Egypt or choose fishermen to take the gospel to the world? Who would devise a plan so that the first are last and the last first, that the way to lead is to serve and the way to have is to give? Yet of all the strange (to us) … Continue reading

Bethlehem: At The Right Time
Taxes were sky high and growing higher. The economy was struggling but military spending was increasing. The threat of world domination by any one of a number of prideful, cruel, self-centered powerful men was real and imminent. Morals were decreasing on all levels of society. Conformity was the cry of the age. The government was giving out more and more free money and services to placate and win approval from a growingly hostile populace. Religion had turned into an external display void of real inner meaning. Racial tensions were bad as various cultures clashed for control. It was in such a time and amid such a world situation that a baby was born to a young couple who had just signed up for a new round of taxes and who soon would find themselves in political exile. The child they brought into the world was to be called ‘Jesus.’ Sounds … Continue reading

Joseph: A Real Man
Men are in trouble today! Most of us don’t grow up knowing what it really means to be a man. Many in the world consider toughness, macho behavior and self-sufficient independence to be marks of a ‘real man.’ . As true manhood fades, the family, church and nation are undermined. Women have to take up the slack, but aren’t able to replace what men are supposed to be and do. Unfortunately it’s not much different for Christian men, either. Just because our sins are forgiven and we are going to heaven when we die doesn’t mean we automatically mature as men! There are very few good role models for men or boys today. There are some in the Bible, though. Joseph in the New Testament is one such man, a real man. Matthew tells the story of Joseph because it is the legal legacy of Jesus. Joseph was a carpenter, … Continue reading

Mary: God’s Slave
Nazareth was a small village that was home to more Gentiles than Jews, including a Roman garrison. There were many pagan temples and the Jews for the most part weren’t particularly godly. It was a despised city in a despised area with a well deserved bad reputation. So why did God choose that as the place to be born into the world? Why did Mary and Joseph have to grow up there? Perhaps to show that Jesus knows what we go through because He and His parents went through the hard parts of life as well. Despite the circumstances, Mary and Joseph kept their lives pure and their eyes on God. Still, she was very surprised that morning when Gabriel appeared and spoke to her (Luke 1:26-38). It was the dream of young girls to be privileged to be the mother of the Messiah, and with a name like Mary … Continue reading
