David and Dysfunctional Families – 4

(Friday, Nov 11, 2011)    We have been looking at dysfunctional families, using King David’s family as an example of how dysfunction works.  In our last blog we started looking at characteristics of dysfunction.  You can refer to that blog if you haven’t read it.  We’ll finish the list today. Stopping talking to a family member is one of the wrong ways dysfunctional families handle conflict.  Absalom wouldn’t speak to Amnon.  David cut off all contact with Absalom for several years.  Tamar cut herself off from the outside world.  Many people still do that today. A scapegoat is found to blame for family problems in many dysfunctional families.  Absalom was clearly the scapegoat in David’s family.  He acted out the pain everyone else felt. He didn’t go along with the ‘rules’ of keeping everything quiet and stuffed within, of blaming ones self and avoiding the real issues.  Thus to those in … Continue reading
